About Bia! Zine

CENTRING COMMUNITIES OF COLOUR IN IRELAND. CELEBRATING OUR FOOD. CONNECTING OUR STORIES. RELISHING OUR CULINARY IDENTITIES.

Bia! – meaning ’food’ in Irish and ‘come’ in Igbo –  is primarily a storytelling project. Through the words and images of immigrant and diasporic communities in Ireland, Bia! seeks to document our commonality, counterbalance mainstream food narratives, and celebrate how immigrants and diasporas assert their presence in Ireland through food.

Bia! Zine is the self-published physical representation of the voices, the food, the stories, and the histories of marginalised communities in Ireland. It highlights how food can be a site for marginalisation and uncertainty and explores identity, cultural heritage, resistance, community, and commensality.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone organised, creative and detail-oriented. If you have experience with Squarespace, Canva, Adobe In-Design and Mailchimp, that’s a plus.

We would love you to be studying or simply passionate about one, some or all of the following:

  • food

  • storytelling in its myriad of forms

  • migrant rights

  • zines and independent publishing

  • writing

  • design (graphic, digital, communication)

  • event planning

  • social media and marketing

We’re open to all applications regardless of your background. However, we’d specifically love to give this opportunity to someone from a migrant or marginalised background or someone seeking refuge or asylum in Ireland.

What you’ll do

You’ll work closely with the editor and founder, Victory Nwabu-Ekeoma, to support the maintenance and production of Bia! Zine.

You’ll support with:

  • design/visualization for both social media and print

  • admin tasks including communications and research

  • social media and newsletter production and promotion, including creating content for Instagram and more

  • pitching, writing and editing content for Bia! Zine

  • events

What we offer

You’ll have lots of opportunities to build a solid writing and design portfolio, learn more about independent publishing, refine your social media and marketing skills, connect with migrant communities across Ireland and eat good food.

This is a paid opportunity to support the Bia! team for 6 months starting from October 2023.

You will be helping out 1 day a week (7 hours). We’d be happy to talk about your availability and flexibility.

The work is mainly from home, however you would need to be based in Ireland and be willing to travel around Ireland for events or interviews if needed.
